Making Meal Logging More Goal-Oriented

Overview
This project focused on an AI-supported meal-logging app for health-conscious users and people tracking calories or macronutrients.
Many nutrition apps use data-heavy dashboards and repetitive entry workflows without clearly connecting the information to a personal goal.
My role was to design the meal-logging experience, goal dashboard, progress visualizations, and a reusable UI library that could support future diet goals, challenges, and achievement levels.
Recording meals can feel repetitive when users must search for food, enter quantities, and interpret several nutritional values after each meal.
Existing apps often displayed more information than users needed or relied on generic progress charts for different goals. A user trying to reduce calorie intake, for example, needed different feedback from someone trying to increase protein consumption.
Users needed a quicker way to record meals and understand whether their behavior was moving them toward or away from their goal.


Problem
My Goal
My goal was to reduce the effort required to log meals and connect each entry to the user’s nutrition goal.
The experience needed to support different entry methods, make progress easy to interpret, and accommodate future goal types without redesigning the interface structure.
What I Did
I designed three meal-entry methods: taking a photo, uploading an existing image, and describing a meal through text.
These options allowed users to record a meal when it happened or return to it later if they forgot to capture it.
I also created reusable components for inputs, cards, navigation, progress indicators, system states, and goal feedback.


The Design Decision
I designed progress visualizations according to the direction of the user’s goal instead of using one chart for every objective.
Users trying to stay below a limit needed to understand how much remained. Users trying to reach a target needed to see how much progress they had made.
Connecting each meal entry to a visible progress update was intended to make the effect of logging more immediate and relevant.




The Solution
Users could log meals through a new photo, an existing image, or a written description. The AI-supported workflow converted the entry into nutritional information for review.
The dashboard prioritized the user’s main goal, current progress, logged meals, and the next meal action instead of giving every metric equal visual weight.
The UI library provided shared patterns that could extend to new goals, challenges, and progress states as the product developed.


Business Impact
The primary business contribution of the design was the creation of a more consistent and extensible product foundation.
The reusable component library reduced the need to design common interface elements independently for each new screen. It also gave future capabilities a shared structure for displaying goals, progress, input states, and feedback.
This foundation was intended to support:
More consistent experiences across the product
Faster design of related nutrition features
Easier expansion into new goal types
Reduced interface fragmentation as the product grew
Reuse of progress patterns for challenges and achievement levels
Clearer handoff between design and development
